  • Quo Vadis, Art – Or Where Is the Audience?

Quo Vadis, Art – Or Where Is the Audience?

The 2026 local Culture Days are officially over, and once again, it was a bittersweet affair. But as always, let’s start with the positive: We are a wonderful group of artists spanning a very broad spectrum. This year, I had the privilege of exhibiting my photography alongside two very lovely and talented artists specializing in abstract painting and fine art prints. The three of us set up camp right in the „epicenter“ of the event – at least, that is what we called it! 😉

Surrounding us, visitors could find everything from woodwork and ceramics to model making, glass art, and an instrument maker who breathes new life into parts of old instruments. A new addition this year was the municipality’s upcycling group, showcasing magnificent products made entirely from „waste.“ In short: It was a massive pool of inspiration, community, and casual exchange among peers.

    A Haven of Inspiration

It is always wonderful to see what others have created over the past year. Spending two days talking shop about ideas and techniques that – at least for me – were completely new: Aquarylic paint and prints made from beverage cartons (Tetra Paks), for example, were entirely new to me but incredibly inspiring to try out.

I enjoyed some fascinating conversations at my booth and was also happy to welcome a few fellow photographers, both old and new. My selection received quite a bit of positive feedback, and I even managed to sell one edition from my series „La Danse des Sabines“, which captures the „dancing junipers“ of El Hierro! To be honest, it went far too cheaply, but for me, it’s not primarily about the sale – although it certainly makes me happy and at least covered the cost of food and drinks for these two days for both myself and my muse! 😊

    Mercy, Mercy, Mercy…

What truly surprises me, however, is that such an event doesn’t draw a larger audience. There is arguably no more accessible way to experience art than this! It isn’t a commercial trade fair where you have to pay admission only to be sweet-talked into buying something at every corner. None of us are professionals. We are all experienced and naturally competent in our respective genres, but we are not arrogant snobs whom people would be afraid to approach. Furthermore, it is explicitly not promoted as a commercial sales exhibition – though selling is, of course, permitted!

And even if people don’t come solely for us visual artists, there was a fantastic supporting program once again. On Saturday, we had a poetry reading set to music followed by young musicians in the evening, and on Sunday, a children’s dance group and a spectacular jazz brunch. All I can say is: Mercy, Mercy, Mercy… 🎷🎶

    A Plea for the Arts!

Shall we keep going? If it’s up to me: a resounding yes! It is simply a beautiful gathering of artists from the surrounding area. I feel incredibly comfortable in this community. Even though I haven’t been a part of it for very long, it already feels as if I’ve been here forever. None of us could pull this off entirely on our own without the support of the local municipality.

As for the audience, I rely on my stoic mindset: I focus on what lies within my sphere of control. I offer my art and my expertise, create beautiful things, and forge connections! The rest is no longer in my power. In two weeks, we will hold our wrap-up meeting, where we will start discussing the first ideas for next year. I am certainly looking forward to it!
